What is a Trattoria? Less formal than a ristorante but more stately than an osteria, the word stems from “Trattore” -an innkeeper or a small restaurant owner- and derives from the old French verb traitier, “to treat”. Trattoria enters the English language in 1832 to refer to the speciality Italian food that the Trattore would typically offer up; our own Cucina Italiana takes its history seriously and the “treats” of the trattoria tradition even more so.
